Gordon “Jay” Kinzler, a transplant surgeon from Glen Ellyn, announced Thursday he plans to run in the 2020 Republican primary for Democratic U.S. Rep. Sean Casten’s 6th District seat.

Kinzler is also an Army Reserve colonel, according to a news release announcing his campaign.

Kinzler said in the release he wants to “end the discord and toxicity in Washington and limit the endless Congressional investigations so Congress can get back to work improving the lives of those they have sworn to serve.”

Former Republican Illinois Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti and former Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives have also filed to run in the Republican primary for the 6th District seat.

Kinzler lost to former Republican U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam in the 2016 Republican primary for the 6th District seat. Kinzler also unsuccessfully ran against Democratic state Rep. Deborah Conroy in the 2018 general election for the 46th House seat after being the top vote-getter in the Republican primary election.

“Just as I have felt the call of duty to serve in the U.S. military and serve my patients, I feel the call of duty to serve the people of Illinois’ 6th Congressional District,” Kinzler said in the release. “I pledge to represent and serve our constituents, not big donors and special interests.

“I’m looking forward to listening to voter concerns in all 53 communities served by the 6th Congressional District,” Kinzler said. “And if given the honor to serve them, I’ll work to improve their lives.”

Kinzler has served on the Glen Ellyn Park Board and as a member of Glen Ellyn’s Environmental Commission, according to his campaign website.

Kinzler and his wife Jennifer live in Glen Ellyn, have two adult children, and rescue dogs and cats.

The 6th District spans five counties and includes portions of Crystal Lake to Hawthorn Woods in the north and down the Fox River from Port Barrington to St. Charles. The district extends diagonally through DuPage County from Bartlett and West Chicago to Hinsdale and Willowbrook.
